Olive and Olive Wood in Corfu
Corfu has been an island full of olive groves since ancient times.
Olive trees are a unique characteristic of the island and they have been cultivated for years by the local people.
Generation after generation, the Corfiots have grown this " blessed crop " which has generously given them all its " gifts " in return.
Not only has it offered a way of life for the locals, but also the opportunity to create several admirable artifacts.
In contemporary times, olive growers proudly continue this tradition by carefully doing everything they can, in order to have the best crop of olives every year and, of course, olive oil of the highest quality as a result.
Olives are harvested from November until April, when they are picked and sent to the oil presses. The locals prefer using the old method of picking olives that includes spreading black nets under the trees, waiting until they fall naturally onto the ground and finally collecting them.
There aren't many olive wood workshops nowadays, though. Still, visitors have the chance to select several items made of olive wood, such as beautifully curved statues, kitchen utensils and even jewellery.
There is also the soap factory " Patounis " in the centre of Corfu town, which counts 105 years of dedicated service in making olive oil soap in the traditional way. Entering the factory is like taking a journey through time, full of scents that capture your senses.
All in all, olives and olive wood are a significant part of the Corfiots' way of life as well as a natural source that helps the financial status of the " emerald " island.
